About Wireless

Wireless networking allows you to connect your laptop or other wireless device to the UMass Lowell wireless network.  Wireless computing devices include laptops, notebooks, tablets, personal digital assistants (PDAs), e-mail-only devices, handheld computers, "wearable" technology and hybrids of any of these. When a school environment is wireless, students are able to use computing devices anywhere within range of the wireless hub or access point (AP) to connect to the Internet and school's networks.  The locations where wireless access is available are called hot spots.

Wireless networking provides mobility and flexibility to faculty and students.  This added convenience allows you to read email, manage your classes or search the library beyond the confines of your office or dorm. All devices meant to connect to the university wireless network must meet the following standards.

  • The wireless network interface cards (NICs) may be 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g capable.
  • The wireless device must be capable of WPA / TKIP authentication.
  • The wireless device must be capable of 802.1x EAP/PEAP with MSCHAPv2 encryption.

Any user connecting to the UML network must abide by the policies set forth by the University of Massachusetts.
